Julia Hagen (an “exceptional musical talent,” according to Berlin’s Tagesspiegel ) is the soloist in Elgar’s elegiac Cello Concerto, a work memorializing the lost lives and a world forever changed by World War I. Shostakovich’s 14th Symphony conveys the plight of four suffering artists through the expressive power found of its superb text-setting and dramatic intensity. Roiling waves and emotional turmoil are vividly depicted in the Four Sea Interludes from Britten’s Peter Grimes. Program: Britten: Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes; Elgar: Cello Concerto; Shostakovich: Symphony No. 14 Performers: Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla (Conductor); Julia Hagen (Cello); Lidia Fridman (Soprano); Alexandros Stavrakakis (Bass)
