Program: Ludwig van Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 5, “Spring”; Ludwig van Beethoven: Songs to be announced; Reena Esmail: New Work for Violin and Baritone Performers: Hilary Hahn (violin); Matthias Goerne (baritone); Yekwon Sunwoo (piano) Three-time Grammy winner Hilary Hahn teams up with Van Cliburn gold medalist Yekwon Sunwoo and baritone Matthias Goerne, whose voice carries “every tremor of emotion with clarity and depth” ( Bachtrack ), for a new work by Indian American composer Reena Esmail. Adding vivid color and warmth to the program, Hahn also performs art songs and a sonata by Beethoven. “Despite being one of his most optimistic works, the [“Spring”] Sonata was written as the composer came to accept that he would never hear again. To this sunny piece Hahn [brings] perfection and energy” ( Bachtrack ).
