A cornerstone of the department’s season, student performers join Gamelan Sari Raras and take the stage under the lead of longtime ensemble director Midiyanto. This intricate ensemble art form—which famously inspired the impressionist harmonies of 19th-century Western composers—continues to bridge the divide of global music. For the Fall semester, the ensemble will explore gamelan’s past and present through traditional compositions, innovative new works by Midiyanto, the transcendent vocal styling of Heni Savitri, and the stately elegance of classical court dance by Lestari Indonesia (directed by Ninik Lunde).
