Data as Contact: Embodiment in Composition and Performance This artist talk explores embodiment and the shifting boundaries between physical experience and data in contemporary composition and performance. Drawing on recent works, I will examine how data becomes a point of contact between bodies, technologies, and musical structures, and how these interactions shape my compositional process. Chi Wang is a composer and performer of electroacoustic music. Her research and compositional interests include sound design, data-driven instrument creation, musical composition, and performance. Her compositions have been presented internationally at the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC), New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), Musicacoustica-Beijing and Hangzhou, the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS) Conference, the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, Kyma International Sound Symposia, Electronic Music Midwest, and events of the International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music, among others. Her work has been selected for SEAMUS CDs and has received recognition including Best Composition from the Americas at ICMC, the Pauline Oliveros New Genre Prize from the International Alliance for Women in Music, an Award of Distinction from the MA/IN Festival of Digital and Creative Culture, and the Prix CIME from the International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music. She was also a finalist in the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition. Chi received her D.M.A. from the University of Oregon, with research focused on the performance of data-driven instruments. She is currently Associate Professor of Music (Composition: Electronic and Computer Music) at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. This event is free and open to the public.
