Join us for four evenings of listening and discovery as Philharmonia’s program notes annotator Scott Foglesong offers a practical introduction to the music, the composers, and the ideas and stories behind it. Class 1: Technically, it’s the musical period from 1600 to about 1750. But that’s just boring dates. Artistically, it was a glorious effusion of new ideas, styles, and genres that reflected two opposing forces—the ostentation of extreme wealth, and the precision of scientific advancement. Some Baroque works give out a cost-no-object vibe, whereas other pieces reflect a fascination with precise forms and the careful organization of musical affects. So while it’s the era of Galileo and Newton, it’s also the era of Monteverdi, Corelli, Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, and a host of others. Class 2: The Baroque Era gave us the orchestra in its earliest incarnations, thanks to that newfangled invention, opera, which required an accompanying ensemble. Baroque orchestral music runs from the refined and elegant (Corelli) to vibrant and innovative (Vivaldi) to profound and heartfelt (Bach) to expertly-crafted and sometimes even spectacular (Handel).
