Join us for four evenings of listening and discovery as Philharmonia’s program notes annotator Scott Foglesong offers a practical introduction to the music, the composers, and the ideas and stories behind it. Class 1: Technically, it’s the musical period from 1600 to about 1750. But that’s just boring dates. Artistically, it was a glorious effusion of new ideas, styles, and genres that reflected two opposing forces—the ostentation of extreme wealth, and the precision of scientific advancement. Some Baroque works give out a cost-no-object vibe, whereas other pieces reflect a fascination with precise forms and the careful organization of musical affects. So while it’s the era of Galileo and Newton, it’s also the era of Monteverdi, Corelli, Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, and a host of others. It was a time of eloquent church music, such as Bach’s cantatas, oratorios, and masses. Vivaldi’s abundant church music has been re-discovered only recently, while French composers such as Lully and Rameau added their own spin to it all. And then there’s Handel— master of the oratorio and the opera, author of the immortal Messiah . Class 4: 20th century composers looked back to the Baroque for inspiration. Stravinsky’s “neo-Baroque” style views Baroque idioms through a modern lens. The rise of historically-informed performance practice that aims to reconstruct, as far as possible, the overall sound world of Baroque music as it was, has also impacted modern composers, who may well for write for the harpsichord instead of the piano, or who may explore the sonic possibilities of earlier string, wind, and brass instruments. The Baroque is very much with us today, as we’ll find out in a session that will include a live performance by members of Philharmonia Baroque!
