Love, laughter, and a little liquid courage take center stage in Elixir of Love , Donizetti’s beloved romantic comedy—reimagined for our FREE and open to the public Opera in the Park series. This hilarious romp follows Nemorino, a hopeless romantic who’s convinced he’ll never win the heart of the witty (and wealthy) Adina. When a smooth-talking traveling “doctor” arrives with a so-called miracle potion—cheap wine in disguise—Nemorino is sure he’s found the answer to finding true love. Add in the hyper-confident soldier Belcore, who also has his sights set on Adina, and what could possibly go wrong? Performed outdoors, with the gazebos of Orinda Community Park and Civic Park in Walnut Creek as our stage, this production features a cast of Festival Opera Resident Artists and guests in a pared-down, fast-moving version of the opera—perfect for both seasoned opera fans and curious newcomers. So you don’t miss a beat, a narrator will deliver punchy scene synopses, and English translations of the Italian text will be available by QR code on each attendee’s smartphone. With unforgettable melodies (including the iconic aria “Una furtiva lagrima” ), big laughs, and heart-on-his-sleeve romance, Elixir of Love proves that true love doesn’t need magic—just a little courage, good timing, and great music. Bring a blanket, grab a seat, and fall in love with opera—in the park!
