Known for his “New Romantic” style, his music is performed internationally. Swafford is highly regarded for his definitive biographies of composers, including Ives, Brahms, Mozart, and the bestseller Beethoven: Anguish and Triumph. Born in 1946, he earned a D.M.A. from Yale and has taught at institutions including Boston Conservatory and Tufts. His biographies, often named New York Times Critics’ Choices, are noted for blending meticulous research with engaging narrative. He won the PEN/Winship Award for his Charles Ives biography. An award-winning composer (NEA grant recipient), his works often explore landscape and nature. He is a recognized music journalist, contributing to Slate and the Boston Globe, and a preconcert lecturer for the Boston Symphony Orchestra.” Giving performances that are “lithe, persuasive” (The New York Times), “eloquent and enthralling” (The Boston Globe), and described as “the most compelling American group to come on the scene” (The New Yorker), the Horszowski Trio has quickly become a vital force in the international chamber music world since their formation in 2011. In 2023, the “Horszowski Trio Prize” was created by the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, to award piano trio winners. In 2019, the Horszowski Trio made its London debut in a sold-out concert presented by Wigmore Hall.
