In 1924, Austrian director Hugo Bettauer released a satirical film imagining a Vienna purged of its Jewish population, a darkly comic warning drawn from the rhetoric of Austria's rising nationalist politicians. One year later, Bettauer was assassinated by a Nazi gunman who was subsequently acquitted and celebrated. The film was banned in 1933 and nearly lost to history until a pristine print was discovered at a Paris flea market in 2015. Parlando presents a live screening with orchestra of the newly restored Die Stadt ohne Juden with Olga Neuwirth's 2018 score, a visceral, urgent work that transforms a century-old cautionary tale into an ominously contemporary one. GREAT VOCALISTS In this thrilling collaboration with the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music, Grammy-nominated baritone Joshua Conyers, acclaimed soprano Kiera Duffy and BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Nicole Cabell—all Eastman faculty—lead Eastman students in a live performance of In Plain Sight: The Black Anthology. This rarely performed repertoire from the Anthology of Art Songs by Black Composers was recorded and produced at URochester earlier this year. This groundbreaking collection of works celebrates how Black American composers adapted the European art song tradition while incorporating distinctive influences from African American spirituals, folk music, poetry and cultural experiences. In Plain Sight brings together a rich body of art songs for voice and piano by Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, William Grant Still, George Walker and many others, in a powerful celebration of Afro-American musical tradition and its impact. BRIDGES Rhythm Nation celebrates American rhythmic traditions as an expression of bodily autonomy and tacit history keeping. From the jagged grooves of Daniel Bernard Roumain’s String Quartet No.1: X (an homage to Malcolm X), to the otherworldly textures of Sun Ra’s “Interstellar Low Ways,” to the lyricism of Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday,” this wide-ranging exploration will also feature movements from Fodé Lassana Diabaté’s Sunjata’s Time. Each of the pieces on the program evokes a distinct rhythmic world, reflecting the plurality of American movement(s) and protecting the unspoken spirit of their lineage’s narratives. Applauded by The Washington Post as “a perfect encapsulation of today’s trends in chamber music,” and by The New Yorker as “independent-minded,” multi-Grammy-nominated PUBLIQuartet is an improvising string quartet whose repertoire blends genres and highlights American multiculturalism. Hailed for their “magnetic momentum and energy” (Feast of Music) “thrilling immediacy” of their “boldly imaginative” playing (BBC Music Magazine), PubliQuartet “brings both technical mastery and freewheeling joy to their music playing” (Feast of Music). The quartet comprises Curtis Stewart and Jannina Norpoth, violin; Nick Revel, viola and Hamilton Berry, cello.
