Grammy Award-winning violinist Jennifer Koh opens PCMS’s 41st season alongside Vijay Iyer, a composer and pianist hailed by The Guardian for his “melodically alluring, rhythmically invigorating, [and] deviously dazzling music.” For his PCMS debut, Iyer joins Koh to give the world premiere of Part II of his Scenes of Living and Dying, a collection of works intended to hold space to channel our private and public griefs. Koh complements Iyer’s original compositions with a selection of solo violin pieces by J.S. Bach. Hailed for “exhilarating performances” (The Times ), the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective currently serves as the Associate Ensemble of London’s Wigmore Hall. KCC’s return to PCMS spotlights the “simply astounding” ( The Telegraph ) virtuoso horn player Ben Goldscheider in a first half of works by Ethel Smyth and the U.S. premiere of a quintet by GRAMMY-nominated composer Anna Clyne. Following intermission Schubert’s Trout quintet is featured— inspired by and named after the composer’s 1817 song, which tells the story of a trout being caught by an angler. The work was published shortly after the composer’s death and today is considered a cornerstone of chamber music repertoire. For over 60 years, the Musicians from Marlboro touring program has brought memorable performances from Vermont’s legendary chamber music school and festival to national audiences. The first of three Marlboro touring ensembles this season is led by founding and former first violinist of the Doric Quartet, Alex Redington, and Jonathan Leibovitz, an emerging clarinetist hailed for his “ability to mesmerize the listener in everything he does” (BBC Music Magazine) . At the heart of this touring program is music by two former Marlboro composers in residence: Brett Dean and Kaija Saariaho. The evening culminates with Mozart’s beloved Clarinet Quintet, a piece which gloriously blends operatic melodies for the clarinet with intimate string writing. “Vocally impressive, verbally elegant, and duly seductive” (Opera News) , the “velvet-voiced” (The New Yorker) baritone Justin Austin makes his PCMS debut with pianist Howard Watkins, a leading vocal collaborator and assistant conductor of the Metropolitan Opera. At the heart of their program are selections from The Threepenny Opera , Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s 1928 satirical, jazz-infused critique of unbridled capitalism. Among other genre-bending works, Austin and Watkins also performs one of the rousing Walt Whitman poems Weill set to music after immigrating to the United States and two songs by Ricky Ian Gordon, one of which explores the tragic death of singer Marvin Gaye. Under the artistic direction of celebrated lutenist Thomas Dunford, the Jupiter Ensemble is at the vanguard of a powerful rediscovery of the Baroque repertoire, bringing fresh vitality to the earliest forms of chamber music. Joined by French-Italian mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre, the ensemble returns to PCMS with a program that weaves together 18th-century portrayals of Amazons—the mythical warrior women—in dramatic stories of power, conflict, and extreme emotion.
