Featuring Renowned Tenor Thomas Cooley Chamber Series The Washington Bach Consort welcomes Thomas Cooley, the internationally acclaimed tenor whose vivid artistry and mastery of early music have made him a leading interpreter of Baroque and pre‑Baroque repertoire worldwide. With a career spanning more than two decades across major stages including Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw, and Berlin Philharmonie, Cooley brings exceptional dramatic instinct and stylistic command to this exploration of the Baroque’s earliest flowering. This richly curated program traces the emergence of a new musical language in early seventeenth‑century Italy—from the pioneering works of Jacopo Peri, Giulio Caccini, and Claudio Monteverdi, whose Seconda Prattica reshaped expressive possibility, to the striking originality of Sigismondo d’India and Barbara Strozzi. With Cooley as guide, audiences will encounter the intensity, rhetorical daring, and evolving vocal aesthetic that gave rise to the Baroque. Bach’s Polyphonic Heritage Chamber Series What vocal traditions did Bach absorb from his ancestors, predecessors, and models? This year’s Vocal Polyphony program—devised by Bach scholar Dr. Daniel R. Melamed—offers a rewarding perspective into the music that shaped Bach’s creative environment. Featuring motets and liturgical works for four to eight voices from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, this program surveys the vocal traditions Bach inherited from the musical past. These works reveal a lineage of expressive craftsmanship and devotional fervor that would resonate variously throughout Bach’s own writing. A group of eight singers from the Washington Bach Consort, joined by organ and violone, bring this broad-ranging repertoire to life. Music by Palestrina, Gallus, Andrea Gabrieli, Bernhard, Schütz, Walter, Knüpfer, Johann Christoph Bach, and Johann Ludwig Bach showcases the breadth and refinement of the polyphonic heritage Bach himself received.
